Jean-Jacques de Boissieu, a French artist from Lyon, produced this etching during his period of travel in Italy. The work depicts the Tomb of Cecilia Metella, a prominent Roman monument situated on the Via Appia. De Boissieu was known for his technical precision in printmaking, often drawing inspiration from Dutch masters of the seventeenth century, such as Jacob van Ruisdael, while applying his own observational rigour to the Italian countryside.
