Description
A fine art print of Gian Lorenzo Bernini's Tomb of Urban VIII, a masterpiece of Baroque sculpture located in Saint Peter's Basilica.
The Tomb of Urban VIII, located within Saint Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, is a defining example of seventeenth-century funerary sculpture. Commissioned by Pope Urban VIII himself, the monument occupies a niche in the apse of the basilica. Gian Lorenzo Bernini designed the structure to integrate the bronze effigy of the Pope with white marble allegorical figures representing Charity and Justice.
The central bronze figure of Urban VIII sits upon a sarcophagus, his right hand raised in a gesture of benediction. The contrast between the dark, patinated bronze of the Pope and the pale, luminous marble of the flanking figures creates a visual hierarchy that directs the viewer's attention. The figure of Charity, positioned to the left, cradles an infant, while Justice stands to the right, holding a sword and scales. A skeletal figure of Death is depicted in the act of inscribing the Pope's name onto the sarcophagus, a common memento mori motif of the period.
Bernini utilised the architectural space of the niche to create a sense of movement and theatricality. The drapery of the figures appears to shift with the light, adding a dynamic quality to the composition. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to manipulate different materials to achieve a unified aesthetic effect. The tomb remains a primary example of the Baroque style, where sculpture, architecture, and light combine to form a cohesive environment. This fine art print captures the textures of the bronze and marble, allowing for an examination of the sculptural details from a distance.
