Kusakabe Kimbei, a prominent photographer of the Meiji period, operated a successful studio in Yokohama. He catered to both domestic and international audiences, producing images that documented Japanese architecture, daily life, and natural scenery for the burgeoning tourism market of the late nineteenth century.

The composition draws the eye into the tunnel-like progression of the gates, which wind through the wooded slopes of Mount Inari.
