Lucebert, born Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk, was a central figure in the Dutch post-war avant-garde. As a poet and painter, he operated within the CoBrA movement, which prioritised spontaneous expression and a rejection of traditional aesthetic constraints. This work, dated 9 December 1960, demonstrates his characteristic approach to the human form. The figure is rendered with a raw, immediate quality that avoids academic precision in favour of emotional directness.

The composition relies on a stark contrast between the fluid, gestural ink washes and the sharp, angular lines of the figure. The head is defined by a simple, almost childlike outline, containing a dark, atmospheric wash that suggests a sense of melancholy or introspection. The torso below is treated with more chaotic, splattered ink marks, creating a texture that feels both organic and disintegrating. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Lucebert forces the viewer to engage with the essential, often unsettling, nature of the subject.

Lucebert often described his own work as 'false art', a term he used to describe his desire to create outside the boundaries of established high culture. His practice was deeply influenced by the art of children and those working outside the mainstream, which he viewed as more authentic.
