This etching, titled Tragala perro, is plate 58 from Francisco de Goya's celebrated series, Los Caprichos. Published in 1799, the series functions as a biting critique of Spanish society, superstition, and the corruption of the clergy and aristocracy. Goya utilised the combination of etching and aquatint to create dramatic tonal contrasts, which heighten the grotesque nature of his subjects.

The scene depicts a group of figures in a state of agitation. A central character, dressed in clerical robes, holds a large syringe, forcing it towards a kneeling figure. The surrounding crowd displays distorted, mocking expressions, suggesting a scene of forced conversion or ideological coercion. The title, which translates to 'Swallow it, dog', refers to a popular song of the period associated with liberal political movements, used here by Goya to mock the intolerance of the reactionary forces in Spain.

Goya's approach to printmaking in this series moved away from the formal constraints of his earlier work. He employed loose, expressive lines and deep aquatint washes to convey psychological tension. The figures are rendered with a sense of urgency, their features exaggerated to emphasise their moral decay. By placing these characters in a dark, undefined space, Goya focuses the viewer's attention on the interaction between the aggressor and the victim. This print remains a clear example of the artist's ability to use satire as a tool for social commentary.
