This engraving by Hieronymus Wierix depicts the resurrected Christ standing in triumph over the personifications of death and the devil. Wierix, a member of a prolific family of engravers based in Antwerp, was known for his technical precision and his contribution to the dissemination of religious imagery during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries.

In this composition, Christ holds a cross-staff, his figure radiating light against a dark, hatched background. Beneath his feet, he subdues a skeletal figure representing death, complete with a scythe, and a monstrous creature representing the devil. The scene is framed by a Latin inscription from Hebrews 2:14, which provides the theological context for the imagery: the destruction of the power of death through the resurrection. The engraving demonstrates the characteristic fine-line technique of the Wierix workshop, utilising dense cross-hatching to create volume and dramatic contrast.

Such prints were often produced in series and served as devotional aids for the Counter-Reformation period. The meticulous detail in the musculature of Christ and the grotesque features of the defeated figures reflect the influence of contemporary Mannerist styles, which favoured elongated forms and complex, symbolic arrangements. The work is a clear example of the high level of craftsmanship associated with the Antwerp print trade, where the Wierix brothers operated with significant commercial success.
