Triptych of the Family Moreel (closed shutters) - Hans Memling

A pair of grisaille panels by Hans Memling, depicting Saint John the Baptist and Saint George as simulated stone sculptures.

This work represents the exterior shutters of the Triptych of the Family Moreel, commissioned by Willem Moreel and his wife, Barbara van Vlaenderberch. Hans Memling employed the technique of grisaille, a method of painting in monochrome shades of grey to simulate the appearance of stone sculpture. This stylistic choice creates a visual illusion, making the figures of Saint John the Baptist and Saint George appear as if they are carved statues housed within shallow niches.

On the left panel, Saint John the Baptist stands with the Agnus Dei, or Lamb of God, at his side. He holds a slender cross, his gaze directed slightly away from the viewer. The right panel depicts Saint George in full plate armour, engaged in the act of slaying the dragon. The artist pays close attention to the metallic textures of the armour and the anatomical details of the figures, despite the restricted colour palette. The use of light and shadow, or chiaroscuro, provides a sense of volume and physical presence to the figures, effectively mimicking the depth of a sculpted relief.

Memling was a master of the Bruges school, and this work demonstrates his ability to integrate traditional religious iconography with the technical precision characteristic of the period. The closed shutters served a functional purpose in a liturgical context, protecting the more colourful interior paintings while providing a solemn, meditative exterior. The restraint in colour directs the viewer to focus on the form and the narrative weight of the saints. This piece remains a clear example of the sophisticated illusionism practised by Northern European artists during the late fifteenth century, where the boundary between painting and sculpture becomes intentionally blurred for the observer.
