Description
A refined woodblock print by Matsuki Heikichi, capturing two carp in motion with delicate colouration and minimalist composition.
This woodblock print by Matsuki Heikichi depicts two carp swimming through water. The composition relies on the minimalist aesthetic common in Japanese kacho-ga, or bird-and-flower painting, which extended to include aquatic life. The artist employs a restrained palette, focusing on the subtle gradation of the water and the distinct colouration of the fish. One carp is rendered in muted grey tones, while the other features a soft, reddish hue with clearly defined scales.
Matsuki Heikichi was a publisher and artist active during the transition into the twentieth century. His work often reflects the technical precision of the Shin-hanga movement, which sought to revitalise traditional woodblock printing techniques by incorporating Western elements of light and shadow. The paper texture remains visible, providing a tactile quality to the print. The negative space occupies a significant portion of the frame, directing the viewer's attention to the movement of the carp as they glide across the surface.
The print demonstrates a high level of technical skill in the carving and printing process, particularly in the application of the bokashi technique, which creates the soft, blurred effect of the water. The absence of a complex background allows the viewer to focus on the anatomy and fluid motion of the subjects. This piece is a representative example of the decorative yet observational nature of Japanese printmaking from this period, where the natural world is captured with both accuracy and artistic interpretation. It provides a quiet, contemplative addition to any collection, maintaining the balance between traditional craft and modern sensibilities.
