This etching by Hieronymus Cock, a prominent Flemish publisher and printmaker, captures the Colosseum in Rome during the mid-sixteenth century. The work belongs to a series of Roman ruins that circulated widely across Europe, shaping the Northern European perception of classical antiquity. Cock, who travelled to Italy in the 1540s, produced these images to document the physical state of ancient structures, often incorporating small figures to provide a sense of scale against the monumental masonry.

The composition focuses on the weathered, crumbling arches of the amphitheatre. Vegetation clings to the upper tiers, suggesting the slow reclamation of the structure by nature. The etching technique allows for precise rendering of the stone textures and the deep shadows within the vaulted spaces. In the foreground, small groups of figures are depicted, some seated and others observing the ruins, which was a common convention in topographical prints of the period to humanise the vast scale of the architecture.
