Description
A traditional Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora, depicting two women in a stylized setting with flowing robes and decorative patterns.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora depicts two figures in a setting intended to represent China, a common theme in mid-nineteenth-century Japanese art known as 'tōjin' or 'foreigners'. Yoshitora, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, produced numerous works that explored international subjects during the final years of the Edo period. The composition features one woman standing in a dynamic pose, her robes flowing with rhythmic lines, while the second woman sits on the floor, holding small cymbals.
The artist employs a flat perspective, typical of the Ukiyo-e tradition, where the wooden floorboards and architectural elements create a stage-like space. The colour palette relies on muted earth tones for the background, contrasted by the saturated reds, blues, and greens of the women's garments. The patterns on the clothing demonstrate the technical precision of the woodblock carving process, with fine lines defining the textile designs. A full moon hangs in the night sky visible through the open structure, providing a sense of atmosphere to the scene.
This work belongs to a series that sought to satisfy the curiosity of the Japanese public regarding foreign cultures. Yoshitora often combined traditional Japanese aesthetic sensibilities with imaginative interpretations of overseas customs. The print remains a clear example of the graphic style prevalent in the late Edo period, where bold outlines and decorative patterns take precedence over realistic anatomical proportions. The work is presented here as a high-quality fine art print, capturing the original textures and hues of the woodblock medium.
