Description
A study of a two-masted schooner in Concarneau, captured with gestural brushwork and an earthy palette by American artist Robert Henri.
Robert Henri, a central figure in the development of American modernism, produced this study during one of his frequent visits to the coastal town of Concarneau in Brittany. The work captures the essence of the harbour through a direct, unmediated approach to the subject. Henri favoured the rapid application of paint, allowing the texture of the brushwork to convey the movement of the water and the atmospheric conditions of the French coast.
The composition focuses on the silhouette of a two-masted schooner set against the distant, abstracted shoreline. Henri employs a palette of earthy ochres, deep blues, and muted greys, reflecting the specific light of the region. Rather than pursuing academic precision, the artist prioritises the immediate visual sensation of the scene. The thick, gestural impasto creates a sense of physical presence, drawing the viewer into the maritime environment.
This piece demonstrates Henri's interest in the plein air tradition, which he encouraged among his students at the New York School of Art. By focusing on the interplay between the vessel and the surrounding harbour, he avoids unnecessary detail, opting instead for a synthesis of form and colour. The work remains a clear example of his ability to translate a fleeting moment into a permanent visual record. It reflects his belief that art should be an honest expression of life, unencumbered by the rigid conventions of the period. The small scale of the panel suggests it was executed on-site, serving as a direct observation of the Breton coast.
