Description
A pair of graphite sketches by Matthijs Maris, capturing a seated figure through loose, atmospheric lines characteristic of his introspective style.
This graphite work by Matthijs Maris captures the artist's process through two distinct studies on a single sheet. Maris, a member of the Hague School, moved away from the realistic depictions favoured by his contemporaries toward a more ethereal, dreamlike quality. These sketches demonstrate his focus on form and atmosphere rather than precise anatomical detail.
The upper study presents a figure in a reclining or seated position, rendered with loose, searching lines that suggest movement and posture. The lower portion of the sheet depicts a figure situated within a sketchily defined outdoor space. The marks here are lighter, focusing on the relationship between the subject and the surrounding environment. Maris often returned to themes of solitary figures, imbuing them with a sense of quiet introspection.
As a draughtsman, Maris utilised graphite to explore light and shadow, often leaving large areas of the paper blank to suggest space. His technique here is spontaneous, reflecting a private moment of observation or memory. The lack of rigid structure in these drawings allows the viewer to see the artist's hand at work, prioritising the emotional resonance of the pose over technical finish. This piece offers a glimpse into the preparatory methods of an artist who spent his later years in London, increasingly isolated from the art world, yet consistently refining his unique, hazy aesthetic. The work is characteristic of his mid-career period, where his interest in the intangible began to dominate his output.
