Description
A detailed handscroll fragment from the Kamakura period, depicting the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara surrounded by a celestial assembly.
This handscroll fragment illustrates the twenty-fifth chapter of the Lotus Sutra, a text central to Mahayana Buddhism. Sugawara Mitsushige, a professional painter active during the mid-thirteenth century, produced this work as part of a larger set of scrolls commissioned by the Taira clan. The composition depicts the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, known in Japan as Kannon, surrounded by a diverse assembly of deities, monks, and celestial beings.
The central figure sits upon a lotus throne, radiating authority and calm. Surrounding this figure are various manifestations of the deity, reflecting the text's description of Kannon's ability to take on different forms to aid those in need. The artist employs a refined palette of mineral pigments, including malachite green, cinnabar red, and gold leaf, applied with precision to the paper surface. The figures are arranged in a tiered formation, suggesting a hierarchy of spiritual beings within a celestial realm.
Clouds rendered in soft, swirling lines frame the assembly, creating a sense of weightlessness and divine atmosphere. The inclusion of precise calligraphic text on the left side provides the necessary scriptural context for the visual narrative. This work demonstrates the high level of technical skill characteristic of Kamakura-period religious art, where the combination of narrative clarity and decorative beauty was paramount. The use of gold leaf adds a reflective quality to the scroll, catching the light and drawing attention to the sacred nature of the subject matter. The balanced distribution of figures across the horizontal space allows for a rhythmic reading of the scene, typical of the handscroll format designed for intimate viewing.
