Description
A refined ukiyo-e woodblock print by Keisai Eisen, capturing a woman in a quiet moment of applying makeup.
This woodblock print by Keisai Eisen depicts a bijin, or beautiful woman, engaged in a private moment of grooming. The subject holds a small cosmetic dish and a brush, applying makeup while observing her reflection. The composition is typical of the late Edo period, where the focus shifts toward the psychological interiority of the subject rather than purely external fashion.
Eisen, a prolific designer of ukiyo-e prints, was known for his depictions of women in the Yoshiwara district. His style often features elongated facial features and a specific grace in the posture of his subjects. In this work, the woman is dressed in a patterned kimono, with her hair styled in an elaborate coiffure secured by decorative pins. The inclusion of a small inset image at the top, resembling a hanging scroll or a landscape view, provides a secondary visual element that balances the primary portrait.
Technically, the print demonstrates the precise line work and flat colour application characteristic of the ukiyo-e tradition. The artist uses a limited palette, allowing the red of the cosmetic dish and the pattern of the kimono to draw the viewer's eye. The background remains neutral, ensuring the focus stays on the woman's expression and her delicate hand movements. This piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the nineteenth-century Japanese urban class, where the art of personal presentation was highly regarded. The print is a fine example of the bijin-ga genre, which sought to capture the fleeting nature of beauty and the quiet rituals of daily life.
