José María Velasco remains the most celebrated figure in nineteenth-century Mexican art, particularly for his mastery of the national geography. This work, completed in 1877, captures the expansive basin of the Valley of Mexico as viewed from the hill of Santa Isabel. The composition employs a wide, panoramic perspective that draws the eye from the rugged, rocky foreground, where a small figure and a dog provide a sense of scale, across the receding plains and lakes, toward the distant, snow-capped volcanoes of Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl.

Velasco utilised his scientific background in botany and geology to inform his artistic practice. The precision of the geological formations and the atmospheric rendering of the sky demonstrate a rigorous observation of the natural world. The light, filtering through clouds that stretch across the horizon, creates a soft transition between the shadowed foreground and the illuminated valley floor. This technique allows for a clear articulation of depth, guiding the viewer through the various layers of the terrain.

Unlike the romanticised European depictions of the era, this painting offers a grounded, empirical study of the Mexican environment. The inclusion of the aqueduct and the small settlements in the middle distance provides a record of the human presence within the vast topography.
