José María Velasco remains the most significant figure in nineteenth-century Mexican art, particularly for his mastery of topographical painting. This work, completed in 1877, captures the expansive geography of the Valley of Mexico as viewed from the hill of Tepeyac. Velasco utilised his scientific training in botany and geology to document the terrain with precision, balancing the vastness of the horizon with the specific details of the foreground.

The composition is structured to guide the eye from the immediate, earthy textures of the foreground path, past the small dwellings and clusters of trees, towards the distant, snow-capped peaks of Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. The middle ground contains the city of Mexico, rendered with a clarity that reflects the artist's dedication to observational accuracy. The sky occupies a significant portion of the canvas, rendered in soft, atmospheric tones that suggest the high altitude of the region.

Velasco avoided the romanticised excesses common in European painting of the period, preferring a disciplined approach that documented the physical reality of his homeland. His work provides a record of the valley before the rapid urbanisation of the twentieth century. The light is diffused, creating a sense of calm and immense scale. The palette relies on naturalistic earth tones, greens, and the pale blues of the distant mountains, maintaining a sense of harmony across the wide panoramic view.
