José María Velasco remains the pre-eminent figure in nineteenth-century Mexican art, known for his meticulous observation of the Valley of Mexico. This work, painted in 1877, captures the expansive geography of the region as viewed from the hills of Tacubaya. Velasco employs a precise, scientific approach to the terrain, balancing the geological accuracy of the distant mountains with the soft, atmospheric quality of the sky.

The composition is structured through a series of receding planes. In the foreground, the dry, scrubby vegetation of the hills provides a tactile contrast to the smooth, hazy expanse of the valley floor. A solitary figure walks along a path, offering a sense of scale to the vastness of the scene. Beyond the immediate foliage, the middle ground reveals the urban and rural development of the valley, leading the eye toward the iconic silhouettes of the Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl volcanoes. These peaks, often shrouded in a delicate, pale light, dominate the horizon.

Velasco was a student of the Academy of San Carlos, where he developed a rigorous method of sketching and painting directly from nature. His work reflects the influence of European Romanticism, yet it is grounded in a specific, nationalistic desire to document the unique topography of his homeland. The palette is dominated by earthy ochres, muted greens, and soft blues, which effectively communicate the dry, high-altitude climate of the Mexican plateau.
