Description
A screenprint by Terry Frost featuring his signature geometric forms and poetic, hand-drawn text inspired by the Cornish coast.
Sir Terry Frost is a central figure in British abstract art, known for his association with the St Ives School. His work often draws upon the rhythms of the Cornish coast, translating the movement of light, water, and celestial bodies into a personal vocabulary of geometric shapes. Variations is a representative example of his later practice, where he combines bold, primary-coloured semi-circles with gestural, hand-drawn text.
The composition is divided into two distinct zones. The upper section features a rhythmic arrangement of semi-circular forms in red, yellow, blue, and black. These shapes suggest a celestial or rhythmic order, echoing the artist's interest in the interplay of light and form. The lower section shifts to a more fluid, organic treatment of blue ink, evoking the motion of water. The inclusion of handwritten text, which reads 'still waters of the water under a front of stars', integrates the artist's poetic sensibility directly into the visual field. This layering of graphic elements and calligraphic script creates a sense of immediacy, as if the viewer is observing a thought process in motion.
Frost's approach to printmaking allowed him to experiment with the layering of flat colour and the texture of the ink. The contrast between the structured, repetitive semi-circles and the loose, expressive blue washes demonstrates his ability to balance order and spontaneity. This print captures the essence of his mature style, where the reduction of form does not sacrifice emotional resonance. It is a work that invites the viewer to engage with the visual language of abstraction through a lens of natural observation and lyrical interpretation.
