Description
A striking 1924 oil painting by Francis Picabia, capturing the masked, unsettling atmosphere of a masquerade ball through bold lines and high-contrast colours.
Francis Picabia, a central figure in the Dada movement, created this work during his period in the south of France. The title refers to a masquerade ball, a common social event in the 1920s. The composition features two figures, their faces rendered with a stark, almost grotesque quality that reflects the artist's rejection of traditional aesthetic norms. The woman, positioned centrally, displays wide, unblinking eyes and a fixed expression, while the man leans in close, his profile obscured by deep shadows and heavy black outlines.
Picabia employs a palette dominated by high-contrast black, white, and magenta, punctuated by flashes of yellow and red. The background is filled with swirling, ribbon-like forms that suggest the festive, chaotic atmosphere of a carnival or dance hall. These decorative elements contrast with the unsettling, mask-like appearance of the subjects. The application of paint is direct and gestural, prioritising raw expression over refined finish. This work captures the spirit of the interwar period, where social artifice and underlying anxiety often coexisted.
By 1924, Picabia had moved away from his earlier mechanical drawings toward a more figurative, yet distorted, style. This painting demonstrates his interest in the human condition, viewed through a lens of irony and detachment. The figures appear trapped within the decorative swirls of the background, suggesting a sense of alienation despite the social setting. The work remains a clear example of his ability to subvert conventional portraiture, using bold lines and jarring colour combinations to disrupt the viewer's expectations. It is a piece that invites scrutiny of the social masks worn in public life, rendered with the characteristic irreverence of the Dadaist tradition.
