Herman van Swanevelt, a Dutch painter and etcher who spent much of his career in Rome, produced this etching during the mid-seventeenth century. His work reflects the influence of the Italianate style, which combined the meticulous observation of nature common in Dutch art with the classical themes and structured compositions favoured by Roman artists of the period.

The scene depicts a mythological narrative set within a dense, wooded environment. To the left, Venus is shown in a chariot, while the right side of the composition features a group of figures resting beneath the heavy canopy of mature trees. Swanevelt employs a sophisticated use of line to differentiate the textures of the gnarled tree trunks, the soft foliage, and the distant, hazy horizon. The etching demonstrates his ability to balance human figures with the surrounding environment, a hallmark of his approach to the pastoral genre.
