Description
A refined mythological allegory by Lorenzo Lotto, depicting Venus and Cupid in a balanced, classical composition.
Lorenzo Lotto, a Venetian painter active during the High Renaissance, produced this allegorical work around 1525. The composition features Venus reclining in a manner reminiscent of classical prototypes, while Cupid stands beside her, holding a laurel wreath above her head. A small incense burner hangs from the wreath, adding a ritualistic element to the scene. The figures are set against a deep red curtain, which provides a stark contrast to the pale flesh tones of the goddess and the child.
Lotto is known for his idiosyncratic approach to the Venetian style, often incorporating psychological tension and unusual iconographic details. In this painting, the presence of rose petals scattered across Venus and the inclusion of a snake near the blue drapery suggest themes related to marriage, fertility, or the dangers of love. The artist employs a smooth application of paint, focusing on the soft modelling of the figures and the tactile quality of the fabrics. The interaction between the two figures is direct, with Venus looking towards the viewer while Cupid concentrates on the wreath. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to blend classical subject matter with a personal, somewhat enigmatic narrative style. It remains a notable example of the mythological paintings produced in Northern Italy during the early sixteenth century, reflecting the period's interest in humanist themes and allegorical representation.
