François Boucher, a central figure of the French Rococo, produced this work in 1754. The composition depicts the goddess Venus visiting the forge of her husband, Vulcan. Boucher employs a soft, atmospheric palette, favouring pastel tones and golden light to create a sense of ethereal grace. The scene is populated by numerous putti, who hover in the clouds above the central figures, adding a sense of movement and playfulness to the mythological narrative.

Venus stands in a contrapposto pose, her form rendered with the smooth, porcelain-like skin tones characteristic of Boucher's mature style. Vulcan, seated at his anvil, is depicted with a more robust, muscular physique, providing a visual contrast to the delicacy of the goddess. The forge itself is relegated to the lower portion of the frame, where scattered tools and metalwork suggest the labour of the god, yet the overall mood remains light and decorative rather than industrial or heavy.

Boucher was a master of the decorative arts, and this painting reflects his ability to integrate mythological subjects into the aesthetic preferences of the mid-eighteenth-century French court. The fluid brushwork and the swirling, cloud-filled background draw the eye upward, creating a sense of verticality that is typical of his large-scale decorative commissions.
