This fine etching and engraving by Gérard Audran depicts a scene from Virgil's Aeneid. The composition is based on a design by the Italian painter Pietro da Cortona. Audran, a member of a prominent family of engravers, was highly regarded for his ability to translate the painterly qualities of Baroque compositions into the precise medium of printmaking.

In this work, Venus is shown floating amongst clouds, gesturing towards the armour that Vulcan has prepared for her son, Aeneas. Vulcan, the blacksmith god, is positioned below, surrounded by the tools and products of his forge. The oval format is typical of the period, often used for decorative ceiling paintings or book illustrations. Audran employs a variety of line weights to create volume and texture, from the soft, billowing clouds to the metallic sheen of the helmet and shield.
