This etching by Gérard de Lairesse depicts a classical mythological scene set within the subterranean workshop of Vulcan. Venus, the goddess of love, sits centrally, carefully placing an arrow into the quiver held by her son, Cupid. The composition draws upon the artist's training in the classicising tradition, which favoured balanced arrangements and clear, sculptural forms. In the background, figures of smiths work at an anvil, their forms rendered with energetic hatching that contrasts with the more static, serene figures of the primary subjects.

Lairesse was a significant figure in the later Dutch Golden Age, known for his theoretical writings on art as much as his paintings and prints. His style often reflects a preference for the idealised beauty found in Italian art, moving away from the gritty realism common in earlier Dutch works.
