Annibale Carracci (1560-1609) was an Italian painter and printmaker of the late Renaissance/early Baroque period. He was a central figure in the development of the Bolognese School of painting, which sought to revive classical ideals in reaction to the prevailing Mannerist style. Carracci's work is characterised by its emphasis on naturalism, clarity, and emotional expression. He drew inspiration from the art of the High Renaissance, particularly the works of Raphael and Titian. 'Venus with a Satyr and Cupids' depicts the goddess Venus reclining on a red cloth, her back turned to the viewer. A satyr stands behind her, holding a bowl of fruit, while several cupids frolic around them. The composition is arranged to draw the eye across the figures, with a focus on Venus's form. The colours are warm and earthy, with a contrast between the pale skin of Venus and the darker tones of the satyr and background. The painting is a fine example of Carracci's ability to combine classical themes with a sense of naturalism and sensuality.
