Description
A character study in graphite by Dutch artist Henk Henriët, featuring a series of figures wearing various hats.
This graphite study by the Dutch artist Henk Henriët captures a series of character sketches, focusing on the expressive potential of headwear and facial features. The composition is sparse, utilising the negative space of the paper to isolate individual figures and small groups. Henriët employs a light, exploratory line quality, suggesting the preparatory nature of the work. The figures are rendered with a focus on caricature, where exaggerated features and distinct hats define the personality of each subject.
On the left side of the sheet, a cluster of figures is depicted with varying degrees of finish. Some are rendered with clear, deliberate strokes, while others remain faint outlines. A single, more fully realised figure stands to the right, wearing a brimmed hat and a structured garment. The artist uses minimal shading, relying instead on the contour of the faces and the silhouette of the hats to convey form. The paper shows signs of age, including minor foxing and a prominent stain in the lower left corner, which adds a tactile quality to the print. This work provides a glimpse into the artist's process, showing how he experimented with character types and observational drawing. It is a study of human variety, captured through a quick, observational lens rather than a formal portraiture approach. The lack of a unified background or setting keeps the focus entirely on the physiognomy of the subjects, reflecting a common practice among mid-twentieth-century draftsmen who prioritised the immediacy of the sketch over polished execution.
