Description
A charming collection of four dog studies by Dutch artist Gesina ter Borch, rendered in ink and watercolour with delicate observation.
This delicate sheet, titled Vier studies van honden, originates from the personal albums of Gesina ter Borch. As a member of a prominent artistic family in the Dutch Republic, Gesina produced a significant body of work that provides insight into the domestic life and leisure activities of the seventeenth-century Dutch elite. Her albums, often referred to as 'poesiealbums', functioned as personal collections of poetry, songs, and drawings.
The composition features four distinct studies of small spaniels, rendered with a light touch and precise observation. Two dogs are depicted resting on patches of green, while the lower pair are shown in a seated and a standing position. The artist employs a restrained palette, using soft browns, creams, and muted greens to define the animals' coats and the ground beneath them. Small red ribbons around the necks of the lower dogs provide a subtle splash of colour, suggesting these were well-cared-for household companions rather than working animals.
Gesina ter Borch demonstrates a keen ability to capture the posture and character of her subjects through economical line work. The ink outlines are fine and controlled, allowing the watercolour washes to provide form without obscuring the underlying drawing. This approach is characteristic of the informal, observational style found throughout her surviving albums. The work is preserved in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, where it remains a record of the artist's technical skill and her interest in the natural world. By focusing on the quiet, everyday presence of these dogs, the artist offers a glimpse into the private sphere of her era, far removed from the grand historical or religious subjects common to the period.
