This fine etching and engraving by François Vivares, dated 1769, reproduces a composition by the French master Claude Lorrain. Vivares, a French engraver who spent his career in London, was instrumental in popularising the works of the Old Masters through his precise printmaking techniques. The scene depicts a coastal harbour near Naples, characterised by the idealised, serene atmosphere common to the seventeenth-century classical tradition.

In the foreground, figures engage in daily activities along the shore, with barrels and small boats suggesting a bustling maritime trade. To the right, a large, mature tree frames the composition, leading the eye towards a classical structure partially obscured by foliage. The middle ground features a calm bay, where ships rest at anchor near a fortified tower and distant city walls. The background recedes into a soft, atmospheric horizon, typical of the Claudian style, which balances architectural elements with the natural world.

Vivares employs a range of hatching and cross-hatching techniques to render the textures of the stone, the foliage of the trees, and the gentle ripples of the water.
