This print is a masterful mezzotint by the British engraver Richard Earlom, published in 1776. It reproduces a drawing by the French Baroque painter Claude Lorrain, which was held in the collection of the Duke of Devonshire. The work depicts a classical Mediterranean harbour at dawn, capturing the arrival of Aeneas in Italy. Earlom was highly regarded for his ability to translate the atmospheric qualities of oil paintings and drawings into the medium of print, using a combination of etching for the outlines and mezzotint for the subtle tonal gradations.

The composition follows the conventions of the idealised classical landscape. A large, gnarled tree dominates the right foreground, framing the scene and leading the eye toward the distant horizon where the sun begins to rise. Ships are moored in the calm water, while figures in a small boat approach the shore, where others pull on ropes to secure their landing. The architectural elements, including the distant temple, provide a sense of historical weight and order. Earlom employs a sepia-toned palette that mimics the appearance of an original ink or wash drawing, lending the print a sense of antiquity and refinement.

This piece was part of the Liber Veritatis, a project initiated by the publisher John Boydell to document the drawings of Claude Lorrain. By creating these prints, Earlom made the works of the Old Masters accessible to a wider audience of collectors and art enthusiasts in the eighteenth century. The precision of the line work combined with the soft, velvety shadows characteristic of the mezzotint process creates a sense of depth and luminosity. It remains a fine example of the technical skill required to replicate the nuances of classical composition through the medium of printmaking.
