Jean-Jacques de Boissieu, a native of Lyon, produced this etching in 1774. The work captures a quiet scene along the River Ain, a subject that reflects the artist's preference for rural motifs and his technical mastery of the etching medium. De Boissieu was largely self-taught as an etcher, yet he developed a sophisticated command of line and tone that allowed him to render the textures of stone, foliage, and water with precision.
