Description

A detailed etching by Isaac Weissenbruch featuring the emblem of the Amsterdam artists' society, Arti et Amicitiae, complete with a winged ox and heraldic shield.

This etching by Isaac Weissenbruch serves as a formal emblem for the Amsterdam-based artists' society, Arti et Amicitiae. Founded in 1839, the society sought to promote professional connections among artists and provide a space for exhibition and social engagement. The design reflects the mid-nineteenth-century preference for classical heraldic motifs and allegorical representation.

At the centre of the composition sits a shield, which is surmounted by a winged ox. This creature is a traditional symbol associated with Saint Luke, the patron saint of painters. The shield itself is flanked by scrolling acanthus leaves, a common decorative element in European graphic design of the period. Below the shield, a ribbon banner carries the Latin inscription 'Arti et Amicitiae', translating to 'For Art and Friendship'. The inclusion of small clusters of fruit and foliage at the base of the shield adds a naturalistic touch to the otherwise formal, structured arrangement.

Weissenbruch, a member of the prominent Dutch family of artists, utilised precise line work to define the textures of the wings, the musculature of the ox, and the shading within the shield. The etching demonstrates a high level of technical control, typical of the reproductive printmaking techniques employed for institutional stationery and membership documents during this era. The composition is balanced and symmetrical, adhering to the conventions of nineteenth-century graphic design where clarity and symbolic weight were prioritised. This print offers a glimpse into the institutional identity of one of the Netherlands' most established art organisations, capturing the values of professional camaraderie and artistic dedication that defined the society throughout the century.
