Shitao, born Zhu Ruoji, remains one of the most influential figures of the early Qing dynasty. As a member of the Ming imperial family who became a Buddhist monk, his work often reflects a sense of detachment and personal expression. This ink wash painting demonstrates his mastery of the brush, utilising varying densities of ink to create depth and texture within the rocky formations. The composition balances the solid, dark masses of the mountains against the negative space of the water, where a small village sits quietly along the shore.

The technique employed here relies on the interplay between wet and dry brushwork. Shitao avoids rigid outlines, preferring to build form through layered washes and controlled splatters.
