Charles François Daubigny, a central figure of the Barbizon School, produced this work during his later years. The painting depicts the coastal area of Villerville, viewed from the rocky expanse of Le Ratier. Daubigny spent significant time along the Normandy coast, often working from his studio boat, the Botin, which allowed him to observe the shifting conditions of the sea and sky at close range.

The composition is dominated by a vast, turbulent sky that occupies the upper two-thirds of the canvas. Daubigny employs a palette of greys, whites, and muted blues to capture the heavy, moisture-laden atmosphere typical of the English Channel. Below, the dark, rugged foreground of Le Ratier provides a stark contrast to the distant, sunlit cliffs of Villerville.
