This engraving by Hans Sebald Beham, dated 1549, displays the technical precision characteristic of the German Little Masters. The composition features the Virgin Mary seated with the Christ Child, who holds a parrot perched upon his hand. Mary holds a pear, a fruit often associated with the sweetness of virtue in Renaissance iconography.
