He experiences a divine vision of the heavenly Jerusalem, which appears as a luminous, ethereal city suspended in the upper left corner of the composition.

An angel stands before the saint, gesturing towards the celestial city. The contrast between the dark, earthy tones of the interior and the radiant light emanating from the vision is a hallmark of Zurbarán's technique.
