José María Velasco remains the most significant figure in nineteenth-century Mexican art, particularly regarding his rigorous approach to the depiction of the national geography. In this work, the artist captures the rolling terrain of Carbonera with a precision that reflects his scientific interests, including geology and botany. The composition follows a classic academic structure, utilising a winding path to guide the viewer's eye from the foreground into the receding layers of hills and distant mountains.

Velasco was a student of the Academia de San Carlos, where he absorbed European techniques of perspective and light, yet he applied these methods to the specific character of the Mexican plateau. The palette is dominated by earthy ochres, burnt siennas, and muted greens, which accurately represent the arid climate of the region. The sky occupies a significant portion of the canvas, filled with the characteristic cumulus clouds that appear frequently in his oeuvre. These clouds are rendered with careful attention to volume and atmospheric density, providing a sense of scale to the vast terrain below.

Unlike the romanticised or idealised views common in European painting of the period, Velasco sought a form of objective truth. He documented the physical reality of the land, including the subtle textures of the scrub vegetation and the uneven surface of the dirt road.
