José María Velasco remains the most significant figure in nineteenth-century Mexican art, particularly for his dedication to the depiction of the national geography. In this work, he captures the terrain surrounding Guelatao, the birthplace of Benito Juárez. The composition employs a wide, panoramic perspective, a hallmark of his approach to the Mexican highlands.

Velasco balances scientific observation with a precise painterly technique.
