A high-quality fine art print of Barnett Newman's 1967 Color Field masterpiece, Voice of Fire, featuring bold vertical bands of blue and red.
Voice of Fire is a large-scale work by Barnett Newman, created for the Expo 67 in Montreal. The composition consists of three vertical bands of colour. Two outer bands of deep blue flank a central stripe of intense red. The work measures over five metres in height, a scale intended to envelop the viewer within the space of the painting. Newman is associated with the Color Field movement, a branch of Abstract Expressionism that prioritised the emotional impact of flat, solid areas of colour. By removing representational imagery, Newman sought to create a direct experience between the viewer and the canvas. The vertical stripe, which Newman termed a 'zip', functions as a structural element that divides the surface while simultaneously pulling the eye across the expanse of the work. The precision of the edges and the flatness of the application are characteristic of his later period, where he moved away from the gestural brushwork seen in earlier abstract art. This piece is notable for its simplicity and its physical presence. The interaction between the blue and red creates a visual tension, as the colours appear to advance or recede depending on the viewer's distance. The work does not rely on traditional perspective or narrative content. Instead, it invites an engagement with the pure properties of colour and scale. The verticality of the composition echoes the human form, creating a sense of scale that relates the viewer to the object in a physical manner. This print captures the precise colour relationships and the monumental proportions of the original, allowing for an appreciation of Newman's approach to spatial organisation and chromatic intensity within a domestic or gallery setting.
