Description
An allegorical engraving by Gerard de Jode depicting the fourth age of man, maturity, governed by the Sun.
This engraving by Gerard de Jode depicts the allegorical concept of maturity, or the fourth age of man, under the celestial influence of the Sun. The composition is structured around the figure of Sol, who appears in the upper register, radiating light from within a cloud formation. Below, a seated female figure, representing Honos or Honour, holds a spindle, linking the domestic sphere to the broader narrative of human life stages. Beside her stands a warrior in full armour, embodying the strength and martial vigour associated with the prime of life.
The background features a skirmish between mounted soldiers, providing a visual counterpoint to the central figures. The scene is rendered with the precise line work characteristic of sixteenth-century Dutch printmaking. De Jode employs varied hatching techniques to define the musculature of the figures, the texture of the armour, and the soft folds of the drapery. The inclusion of Latin text at the base identifies the subject matter, situating the work within the tradition of humanist iconography.
As a publisher and engraver, De Jode was central to the dissemination of Mannerist and Renaissance imagery in the Low Countries. This print reflects the period's interest in astrological and classical themes, where planetary influences were thought to govern the temperament and activities of individuals. The balance between the static, symbolic figures in the foreground and the dynamic action in the background demonstrates the technical control typical of the period. The print serves as a record of the visual language used to communicate complex philosophical ideas to a learned audience during the late sixteenth century.
