This copperplate engraving by Theodor de Bry originates from the series 'America', specifically the volume documenting the customs of the indigenous peoples of Florida. De Bry, a Flemish engraver and publisher, produced these works in Frankfurt to satisfy European curiosity regarding the New World. He relied upon the watercolours of Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues, an artist who accompanied the French expedition to Florida in 1564.

The composition depicts a group of women surrounding a seated male prisoner. The scene is rendered with the precise, linear quality characteristic of late sixteenth-century printmaking. De Bry employs a system of hatching and cross-hatching to define the musculature of the figures and the texture of the ground. The figures are arranged in a circular formation, creating a sense of narrative focus upon the central action. The artist includes details such as infants carried on backs and specific implements, which were intended to provide a visual account of the cultural practices observed by the European explorers.
