Description

A detailed lithograph by Richard Parkes Bonington depicting a street scene in Besançon, originally published in the Voyages pittoresques et romantiques dans l'ancienne France.

This lithograph, titled Vue d'une rue des faubourgs de Besançon, originates from the ambitious publication Voyages pittoresques et romantiques dans l'ancienne France. This series, initiated by Baron Taylor and Charles Nodier, aimed to document the architectural heritage of France through the medium of lithography. Richard Parkes Bonington, a British artist who spent much of his career in France, contributed this work to the Franche-Comté volume.

The composition captures a street scene in the outskirts of Besançon. Bonington employs a sophisticated range of tonal values to render the textures of the stone buildings, the weathered timber framing, and the atmospheric sky. The architecture displays a mix of Gothic and vernacular elements, with tall, narrow chimneys and steep rooflines that define the silhouette against the clouds. Smoke rises from the chimneys, suggesting the daily activity of the inhabitants.

In the foreground, a group of figures gathers in the street. Their presence provides a sense of scale and human narrative to the architectural study. Bonington uses fine, precise lines to delineate the decorative stonework on the left-hand building, contrasting this with the softer, more diffused light falling across the central structures. The print demonstrates the technical capabilities of early nineteenth-century lithography, particularly in its ability to replicate the nuances of light and shadow found in original drawings. The work reflects the Romantic interest in the picturesque qualities of historical sites, focusing on the character of old towns rather than purely topographical accuracy. By documenting these specific urban environments, Bonington and his contemporaries preserved the visual identity of French regions during a period of rapid change.
