Description
A detailed etching and aquatint by Frits Thaulow, capturing washerwomen at work by a stone bridge in Quimperlé.
Frits Thaulow, a Norwegian painter who spent much of his career in France, produced this etching and aquatint depicting a quiet scene in the Breton town of Quimperlé. The composition focuses on the daily labour of local women washing linens along the riverbank, a subject that allowed the artist to explore his fascination with the movement and reflection of water.
The stone bridge, with its three distinct arches, provides a structural frame for the scene. Thaulow uses the aquatint process to capture the shifting light on the water surface, creating a sense of depth and fluidity. The figures of the washerwomen, dressed in traditional attire, are positioned in the foreground, their dark clothing contrasting with the lighter tones of the stone quay and the shimmering river.
Thaulow was known for his technical skill in printmaking, often using colour aquatint to achieve atmospheric effects that mirrored his oil paintings. This work demonstrates his ability to balance architectural elements with the organic, restless nature of the river. The muted palette, dominated by greens, greys, and earthy browns, reflects the damp, overcast conditions typical of the region. By capturing this moment of routine activity, Thaulow provides a glimpse into the social and physical environment of late nineteenth-century Brittany. The print remains a representative example of his interest in the interplay between human presence and the natural world.
