Niko Pirosmani, a self-taught Georgian painter, produced this work on oilcloth, a material he frequently utilised due to its affordability and availability in the taverns of Tiflis. The composition features a mother bear and her two cubs positioned within a dark, stylised cornfield. The stark contrast between the pale, luminous forms of the bears and the deep, murky background is a hallmark of Pirosmani's aesthetic. He often painted on black oilcloth, leaving sections of the original surface exposed to create shadows and depth without the need for complex layering.

The bears are rendered with a direct, simplified anatomy that prioritises character over anatomical precision. Their expressions possess a quiet, watchful quality.
