This hanging scroll depicts a stalk of white hollyhocks, rendered with the characteristic restraint associated with the Rinpa school. Tawaraya Sōtatsu, a founder of this movement, utilised the tarashikomi technique: a method of dropping wet ink or pigment onto a surface already saturated with colour to create soft, bleeding edges. This approach allows the petals to appear translucent and delicate, capturing the ephemeral nature of the flower. The composition is sparse, focusing entirely on the vertical growth of the plant against a neutral, aged paper background.
