Description
A detailed seventeenth-century botanical etching by Johannes Janssonius, featuring precise illustrations of vetch and yarrow with multilingual labels.
This botanical study by Johannes Janssonius presents two distinct plant species, Vicia (vetch) and Achillea (yarrow), rendered with the precision characteristic of seventeenth-century scientific illustration. Janssonius, primarily known for his cartographic work and publishing house in Amsterdam, produced various plates documenting the natural world. This etching demonstrates the period's focus on empirical observation and the systematic classification of flora.
The composition is divided into two clear sections. On the left, the vetch is depicted with its characteristic pinnate leaves and slender, climbing stems. The right side features the yarrow, recognisable by its feathery, fern-like foliage and dense, flat-topped clusters of small flowers. Each specimen is accompanied by labels in Latin, French, English, German, and Italian, reflecting the international scholarly exchange of the era. The lines are clean and deliberate, prioritising clarity and anatomical accuracy over decorative flourish. The artist employs hatching to suggest volume and shadow, providing a sense of three-dimensional form while maintaining a flat, encyclopaedic presentation suitable for study.
This print captures the intersection of art and early modern science. It functions as a visual record of botanical knowledge, intended for reference rather than aesthetic display. The inclusion of multiple linguistic labels indicates its intended audience of scholars and naturalists across Europe. The work remains a fine example of the technical skill involved in copperplate etching during the Dutch Golden Age, where the demand for accurate visual information drove the production of high-quality scientific imagery. The paper shows the natural ageing expected of a seventeenth-century document, adding to its historical character.
