A minimalist woodblock print by Kamisaka Sekka, featuring stylised pine trees leaning in the wind, taken from the 1909 collection Momoyogusa.
This woodblock print originates from the collection titled Momoyogusa, or Flowers of a Hundred Worlds, published in 1909. Kamisaka Sekka, a figure associated with the revival of the Rinpa school in the early twentieth century, produced these designs to bridge traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern design sensibilities. The composition depicts a series of pine trees leaning under the force of a coastal wind, a subject known as sonarematsu in Japanese art. Sekka employs a simplified visual language, reducing the trees to bold, sweeping forms. The trunks are rendered in muted brown tones, while the foliage is represented by flat, saturated green shapes. A sliver of deep blue suggests the sea or sky, providing a sharp contrast to the pale, neutral background. The artist avoids unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the rhythmic movement of the trees and the balance of negative space. This approach reflects the influence of the Rinpa tradition, which often prioritises decorative clarity and the stylisation of natural motifs over strict realism. As a designer, Sekka worked across various media, including ceramics, textiles, and lacquerware. His prints for Momoyogusa were intended to demonstrate the application of traditional motifs to contemporary objects. The print exhibits a high degree of graphic economy, where the placement of each element is calculated to create a sense of motion. The lack of traditional shading or perspective creates a flat, graphic quality that aligns with the principles of early modern design. This piece offers a clear example of how Sekka reinterpreted classical Japanese themes for a new century, maintaining the spirit of the Rinpa school while adopting a modern, minimalist aesthetic.
