Description
A refined Japanese surimono woodblock print by Totoya Hokkei, featuring a minimalist arrangement of a wine-cup and folding fan with accompanying poetry.
This print is a fine example of a surimono, a genre of privately commissioned woodblock prints popular in Japan during the Edo period. Unlike commercial prints produced for the mass market, surimono were created for small circles of poets and connoisseurs, often to commemorate special occasions or to accompany poetry competitions. Totoya Hokkei, a student of Katsushika Hokusai, was a master of this refined format.
The composition features a simple arrangement of a wine-cup and a folding fan, rendered with a focus on negative space and balance. The wine-cup, finished in a muted red, bears a calligraphic inscription, while the fan is depicted with delicate, clean lines that suggest its texture and form. The inclusion of Japanese script across the upper portion of the print integrates the visual elements with the literary content, a common practice in surimono where the image and text function as a unified aesthetic experience.
The printing technique employed here demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship associated with the period. Subtle gradations of colour and the precise application of ink reflect the collaborative effort between the artist, the carver, and the printer. The paper quality and the restrained palette contribute to the overall sense of understated elegance. This work captures the ephemeral nature of the objects depicted, inviting the viewer to appreciate the beauty found in everyday items. By focusing on these specific motifs, Hokkei demonstrates his ability to elevate mundane subjects through careful composition and technical skill. The print remains a representative piece of the cultural life of the literati in nineteenth-century Japan, where art and poetry were deeply intertwined in the social fabric of the time.
