Description
A serene woodblock print by Hasui Kawase, depicting a moonlit winter scene on the Toyama Plain with silhouetted trees and reflective pools.
Hasui Kawase, a central figure in the Shin-hanga movement, produced this woodblock print in 1931. The work captures a quiet, nocturnal scene on the Toyama Plain. The composition relies on the verticality of three silhouetted trees, which frame a pale, luminous moon suspended in a deep indigo sky. Below, the ground is rendered in muted, earthy tones, suggesting a frost-covered field. Small pools of water in the foreground reflect the moonlight, adding a subtle luminosity to the lower portion of the print.
Kawase is recognised for his ability to convey atmospheric conditions through the traditional medium of woodblock printing. In this piece, the gradation of the sky, known as bokashi, creates a smooth transition from the dark upper reaches to the lighter horizon. This technique allows for a sense of depth and stillness, characteristic of his approach to Japanese scenery. The trees are depicted with precise, thin lines, maintaining a balance between graphic clarity and naturalistic observation. The distant tree line, partially obscured by a light mist, provides a sense of scale and distance.
Unlike the earlier Ukiyo-e prints that often focused on urban life or theatrical subjects, Kawase directed his attention toward the quietude of rural Japan. His work reflects a period of transition in Japanese art, where traditional craftsmanship met modern sensibilities regarding light and shadow. The print avoids excessive detail, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay between the dark silhouettes and the soft, cool light of the moon. This piece remains a representative example of his technical skill and his capacity to evoke a specific mood through minimal elements. The print is a study in contrast, where the coldness of the winter night is tempered by the gentle glow of the moon, creating a sense of calm isolation.
