Kusakabe Kimbei was a prominent figure in the Meiji-era photography scene. He operated a studio in Yokohama, catering to both local residents and international travellers who sought souvenirs of Japan. His work often involved the application of watercolours to black-and-white photographs, a technique that required precision and a delicate touch. This process allowed for the subtle rendering of the purple wisteria blossoms against the muted tones of the wooden structures and the water.

The Kameido Tenjin Shrine was a popular destination for viewing wisteria, a subject frequently depicted in ukiyo-e woodblock prints by artists such as Utagawa Hiroshige. Kimbei's photograph adopts a similar compositional approach, using the foreground foliage to guide the viewer's eye toward the bridge. The image provides a record of the site as it appeared in the late nineteenth century, documenting both the architecture and the seasonal customs of the period. The print retains the original mount, which includes the studio's catalogue number, 641, in the lower corner.
