This etching, executed by François Boucher, forms part of a series of prints reproducing the drawings of Antoine Watteau. The work depicts a figure in a costume inspired by European interpretations of East Asian attire, a style known as Chinoiserie. Boucher, who was a master of the Rococo aesthetic, captures the subject seated in a simplified, exoticised environment. A palm tree stands to the left, while a hat and a staff lie on the ground beside the figure. The composition relies on delicate, precise lines to define the folds of the fabric and the soft features of the woman. During the eighteenth century, European artists frequently engaged with themes of the Orient through a lens of fantasy and decorative art.
